Beach to Beach to Beer

Coming up May 30th is one of St John Brewers' favorite local events - the Beach to Beach Power Swim, sponsored by Friends of the Virgin Islands National Park. Participants can swim a short, intermediate or long course, or participate in a relay, and there are assisted and unassisted categories... the best part, of course, is the party at the end, held on beautiful Oppenheimer Beach with beverages provided by none other than St John Brewers.

After all the excitement of March, we decided to get back in touch with our St John roots with a beach clean up in April... for five years running St John Brewers has adopted Honeymoon and Solomon beaches on the Lind Point Trail - they're two of our favorites, so we like to help keep them clean.

Post-eco-responsibility it was back on the party wagon with the Crazy Hat Keg Party and the Cowboy Up Party. Pictures of both are now available for viewing/mockery on the website's PHOTOS page...

Other than that, we've been gearing up for May, which has several highlights for us... more details, soon come.

Life in the island dem, it crazy... seems we haven't updated as often as we'd like these past few weeks, but fear not, we're about to remedy that.

March was a good time for St John Brewers, both here on island and Stateside. Kevin and Tim hit up Atlantic City for our 3rd annual AC Brewing Festival and had a great time catching up with all our tri-state area fans... this year the Tropical Mango seemed to hit it out of the park as the St John Brewers fan favorite, despite fierce competition from Island Summer Ale, Liquid Sunshine, and Island Hoppin' IPA. Looking forward to next year, Atlantic City!

On the homefront in St John, the Tap Room expanded the Mug Club, welcoming its second class... lots of camaraderie between the new kids and the "sophomores", especially on Mug Club Tuesdays... nice to see our loyal local patrons bonding! Do we sense a Mug Club tattoo in the near future?? Also, in an unofficial, "further attempts not encouraged by St John Brewers" moment, two of our most esteemed local patrons christened the new draft system by "drinking the line"... 13 beers, 3 sodas-as-mixed-drinks... winning time? 2 hours, 34 minutes. Amazing. We are protecting the victor's name because the paparazzi won't stop hounding him... but Mike Lane came in second.

St John Brewers Gets Tuff in the New Year

2010 is here, and around the Tap Room that means one thing... 8 Tuff Miles registration is upon us once again. For the fourth straight year, St John Brewers is a sponsor of the annual race, and the Tap Room is once again serving as the sole registration location on St John until February. Anyone looking for an excuse to come down and visit, this is a great one. Dust off your running shoes (or walking shoes!) and check out the 8 Tuff Miles website for online registration information.

Christmas in the Caribbean

The holidays here in St John can feel a little unorthodox... palm trees strung with Christmas lights, 80 degree temperatures and bikinis on Christmas day, the only white on the ground - sand. Still, here at St John Brewers we've developed a few traditions that really help us get into the holiday spirit.

The first tradition, which really kicks off the season for us, is centered on snowflakes. Snowflakes, you say? In St John? 'Tis true. Paper snowflakes, just like the ones you made in grammar school, to decorate the Tap Room. Everyone contributes: our staff, our customers, Mongoose Junction neighbors... and when they're all done, they hang from the ceiling in the bar like a tropical blizzard.

If you've spent the holidays in St John with us, you know that the hanging snowflakes can only mean one thing... SWEATER PARTY! This year our third annual Sweater Party is on December 19th, and all over the island, people are scrambling to find the most awful holiday sweaters they can (not an easy feat down here!)... The 411 on Island Hoppin' IPA

"Soon Come" is here... at least in the VI, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Bottles of the Island Hoppin' IPA are available in a limited pre-release as of this week in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and the IPA will arrive in the VI on draft this week. Bottles will follow in the VI sometime in December, and a full scale release in all of our distribution states (RI, NJ, MA, FL, NE, CA) will happen mid-winter.

The Island Hoppin' IPA is a bright, copper color with a piney, citrus aroma. Its balanced malt backbone compliments the characteristic hoppiness, and the beer finishes with a lingering hop dryness.

Island Hoppin' by the numbers: ABV 6.2%, 50 IBU's.

The Tap Room will host an Island Hoppin' IPA "First Keg" Party on Friday, November 13th, from 4 to 10 pm.

Friday night saw an impressive gathering at the Tap Room for the first annual Hallows Eve Ball. Red carpet sightings included Adam and Eve, the Coppertone Baby, Buddy the Elf, Edward Scissorhands, the always adorable Almond Hershey's Kiss. Live music kept revelers in a festive mood, and everyone enjoyed the draft beer selection, including the seasonally appropriate Pumpkinhead from Shipyard Brewing. Beach Benefits and Halloween on the Horizon

This past weekend saw St John Brewers out at the beach, Oppenheimer Beach to be exact, celebrating some of our local customers and their impressive recent accomplishment. Tory Lane and Sara Stephens swam around St John this summer, completing the 35 mile swim in stages, a leg or two each weekend. Motivation like that definitely deserves a party! Beer, food (donated and prepared by Woody's Seafood Saloon), music and games seemed like the right way to celebrate, even better if the proceeds go to charity. In this case all proceeds went to Kids And The Sea (K.A.T.S.), a sailing program based in Coral Bay. After Tory and Sara dominated the beer pong tournament (they're great at a lot of stuff), they even donated all their prize money to K.A.T.S. as well. It was a beautiful day, a great party, and an example of all the things that make St John so special. In total $840 was raised for K.A.T.S.

Next on the horizon is HALLOWEEN! We at St John Brewers are big fans of this holiday - between getting an excuse to dress up and getting to watch the kids trick-or-treat in Mongoose Junction, what's not to like? This year marks our first annual Hallows Eve Ball, on Friday night. Costumes encouraged and rewarded, of course. Lots of pictures soon come, to be sure.

Stuck in the office? Temperatures dropping outside? Time to check in on life in paradise, or at least the view from the St John Brewers HQ here in Cruz Bay. Our webcam will provide a peek at St John when you need a momentary vacation from real life... stay tuned, it should be up and running in a couple weeks.

We've gotten a strange little dose of reality ourselves recently in Cruz Bay, in the form of several traffic lights! Temporary, of course, they're helping traffic to run smoothly (or at least smoother) while the Cruz Bay roundabout if finished and the North Shore Road is resurfaced... interested in seeing pictures? A Caribbean Fall...

The weather's cooling down all over the States, but here in St John... well, it stays pretty much the same. Sunny skies and temperatures in the 80's make our little island a rather delightful place to be these days. We locals are all enjoying the quiet that comes with the fall months down here... deserted beaches, parking spaces in Cruz Bay... but we're also gearing up for high season!

St John Brewers kept busy in September, staying involved with the community by helping out with the Love City Triathlon (organized by St John Landsharks), and working on our upcoming IPA (soon come!). Of course, it's also football season, so there go our Saturdays and Sundays! Saturday nights mean beer pong down at the Tap Room... an extra good time paired with late night college football. If you're in the neighborhood this fall, be sure to stop by and visit.

There's a lot coming up for St John Brewers this season, so stay tuned!

Island Hoppin'

Island Hoppin'... seems to be our theme this week at St John Brewers, or at least travel in general. In the brew room the Island Hoppin' IPA is carbonating - lots of excitement here in Cruz Bay over this one! Kevin and Cheech are hopping around too, all over the East Coast for business, including a beer tasting tonight, August 5th, in Orlando, FL.

Back here on the island, we're all just trying to hang out in the A/C and cold draft beer at the Tap Room... no better way to finish up a day of beaching or boating! Another great way to keep occupied in the cool, cool bar: read some interesting beer blogs (after ours of course!). Check out our friends at GreatBrewers.com... lots of interesting options, including "Why Craft Beer?".

In The Summertime...

It's the height of summer here in Cruz Bay, and everyone is enjoying the air-conditioning at the Tap Room. We kicked off the month of July with a great showing in the Carnival parade on the 4th. We sampled out some beer from the float, danced a bit, and of course, wrapped it all up by dumping the cooler of ice all over Kevin and Cheech!

With Carnival behind us, we've all been enjoying the Liquid Sunshine Wheat on draft, not to mention a little R&R. Rum and Root Beer is sweeping St John, a favorite with locals and visitors alike, especially now that you can get it all over the island. We like it so much, in fact, that we're throwing a party... Wednesday night at 5 o'clock. Root Beer floats for the kids, and Rum and Root Beer for the grown ups - definitely fun for everyone! Check out the event on Facebook.

With the Festival Parade just around the corner, things are going strong at St John Brewers... This past week saw the debut of Liquid Sunshine on draft at the Tap Room, and the launch of StJB Root Beer in bottles on St John. Posters around town let it be known - "Rum’s got a new friend on island"! - everyone needs some R&R. St John Brewers is also a sponsor of this week's "Steak-Off" story on On-StJohn.com. What's New With St John Brewers

It’s been an exciting couple of weeks for St John Brewers! Kevin and Cheech are on the road, testing the first batch of Liquid Sunshine Belgian-Style Ale in Maine, putting in an appearance at their University of Vermont 10 year reunion (with beer for everyone, of course!), then down to Boston for the Liquid Sunshine launch party at Big City on June 10th. Down here in the VI, St John Brewers is gearing up for Carnival 2009, but first, Root Beer in bottles! All the under-18 crowd here in St John will be excited for that, to be sure, but the big kids are definitely looking forward to some R&R at home (that's rum and root beer, for those who haven't yet had the pleasure). All in all, just another day at the beach for St John Brewers...

The weekend’s nearly here, and that means it's time for more fun with St John Brewers. Friday night we have our second Porch Party of the month... Keg of Summer Ale on the back porch, and everyone drinking out of red cups - feels like college all over again! Then on Sunday, StJB hits the beach for the Friends of the VI National Park's annual Beach to Beach Power Swim. We support the swimmers by providing much needed refreshment after the race at the "Beer Shack"... Ice cold Summer Ale and Tropical Mango Pale Ale, just the pick-me-up everyone needs to rally for the Awards Ceremony. This past Saturday was a big day here on St John... In addition to Timmy's Yellow Party and Beer Pong Tournament at the Tap Room, the Animal Care Center of St John held their annual fundraiser dog show, Wagapalooza. Always a great event, this year St John Brewers got to participate too! Kevin and Cheech donated a keg and their time and served up tasty draft Island Summer Ales to the spectators. A good time was had by all, and the fun continued at Mongoose Junction and the Tap Room late into the night.
